Health Requirements for New Workplaces

Occupational health requirements set at the planning stage, so new and changed workplaces meet legal limits from day one.

Health risks are easier and cheaper to control when the requirements are known before a workplace is built or changed. AirCHECK identifies the occupational hygiene hazards of your planned workplace or process and states the requirements it must meet. Your engineers, designers and suppliers then design and install the solutions.

When this service helps

Involve us when you are planning a new workplace, process or production line, or changing an existing one, while the requirements can still be built in.

What we do

Depending on the project, our input may include:

  • Identifying the foreseeable occupational health hazards of the planned workplace, process, equipment and materials.
  • Stating the legal limits and performance requirements that apply, for example required lighting levels, noise limits or occupational exposure limits.
  • Advising where exposure must be controlled, and which type of control is needed in line with the hierarchy of controls, for example local exhaust ventilation, enclosure or isolation.
  • Once installed, measuring and testing whether the workplace and controls meet the requirements.

What we do not do

To protect our independence as a SANAS-accredited Type A inspection body, AirCHECK does not design, specify by brand, supply, install or maintain equipment or control systems. Where a control needs to be designed, we recommend that you appoint a suitably qualified engineer or specialist. We do not receive any fee or benefit from engineers, designers or suppliers.

What you receive

A written statement of the occupational hygiene requirements for your project and, once the workplace is operational, an independent inspection or survey report. The scope and deliverables are agreed for each project.

Professional and regulatory context

Our input is based on the Occupational Health and Safety Act and its regulations, applicable SANS standards and recognised occupational hygiene principles.
